Lake District Villages

Welcome to The Lake District dot eu, the site dedicated to the stunning Lake District of northern England. Find local lakeland villages and other info with our pages.

Villages and small towns are scattered throughout Lakeland and each has its own individual charm or characteristics. The most visited villages in Lakeland are so well known that they are familiar names to most people. The most well known include Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside and Newby Bridge, all of which are around Lake Windermere; Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere, Rydal, Patterdale, Buttermere, Grange, Keswick, Bassenthwaite and Threlkeld are all places that are well known and visited.

The greatest concentration of villages that attract holidaymakers is between, and just around, Coniston Water and Windermere. It's between these lakes, also, that you'll find Grizedale and Grizedale Forest. Keswick, which is often seen as the hub of Lakeland; it's by far the biggest town (although it can only really be classed as 'small') and offers many shops, galleries, places of entertainment and interest as well as being an ideal base from which to explore the more craggy mountains of Lakeland. Scattered between these better known villages are innumerable small villages and hamlets which can offer their own individual specialities or are found near to places of historical or other interest. Look at any map of Lakeland and you'll see immediately which area, or areas, will provide the sort of things that you, personally, want from your holiday. You can choose the isolated and secluded, with perhaps just a village pub or Keswick, with its theatre, cinema, events and festivals, or something in-between. Wherever you choose to stay, whether camping, caravaning, B&B or a luxury hotel, it would be hard to make a mistake.
